In recognition of their hard work, dedication and achievement on behalf of BCS and to reward their length of service.

At the end of the current season (June 2018) of events in Manchester, Tom Hinchliffe and Gordon Adshead will be stepping down as Chair and Secretary, respectively, of the North West Group of the CCS.

Both Tom and Gordon have devoted much time and effort in these roles with the CCS in furthering BCS’s aims, and fostering relationships with other organisations. They have developed and managed a vibrant and active group over a long period.

Amongst other things, the North West Group organises regular presentations in Manchester, sometimes in co-operation with other voluntary organisations, for the benefit of members and the general public.

Both the Chair and Secretary of the North West Group are members of the CCS Committee.

Tom Hinchliffe

Tom Hinchliffe has been Chair of the North West Group of the CCS for 18 years, taking over the job from the late Professor Frank Sumner in 2000.

During a distinguished career with ICL, Tom rose to become Head of the Mainframe Development Division, responsible for all development aspects of ICL’s flagship large computers both hardware and software. While Tom was Head of Mainframe Development, he enthusiastically sponsored the building of the “Baby” replica, a successful CCS project to build, demonstrate and maintain a replica of the Small-Scale Experimental Machine (SSEM) – the world’s first computer, at the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester (MSI), supplying materials and workshop resources to the CCS free of charge.

He has been Chair of Council and Pro-Chancellor of the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST) and was a director of MSI.

The Silver Lapel Pin Long Service Award has been presented to Tom Hinchliffe, who has served the BCS as Chair of the North West Group of CCS for 18 years.

Gordon Adshead

Gordon Adshead assumed the position of secretary in 2010 following a career in ICL during which he built up the Design Automation Division providing the tools needed to support the design and manufacture of several generations of mainframes.

The Bronze Lapel Pin Long Service Award has been presented to Gordon Adshead, who has served as Secretary of the North West Group of CCS for seven years.
